New York City – Beyond
Brooklyn Heights is one my favorite New York neighborhoods for an engagement session. The quiet, tree-lined streets of brownstones and carriage houses make for a really romantic setting. From Pierrepont to Pineapple Street, Brooklyn Heights feels like a movie set at times.
I met Lauren and Patrick for the first time on the stoop of their Brooklyn Heights brownstone, and we hit if off right away. I decided to document Lauren and Patrick in their own neighborhood for their engagement session, strolling through the Brooklyn Heights streets with their dog, admiring the architecture, watching the sunset from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and of course getting a cone from the Kustard King ice cream truck.
I'm a big believer in making engagement sessions as natural and organic as possible. My approach to engagement sessions is to think of them like an editorial spread for a magazine where I'm hired to photograph a day in the life of my subjects. I want my couples to feel like they're just hanging out together, doing an activity they would naturally be doing, in a location that means something to them. After all, I want my engagement session photos to mean something to my couples even after years have passed. It's a document of what life looked like for them at that moment in time - where they lived, what their neighborhood was like, what their favorite activities were and how they expressed their affection for each other.
Here's a few frames from Lauren and Patrick's Brooklyn Heights engagement session...
Later that year, I photographed Lauren and Patrick's epic Brooklyn wedding, officiated by Senator Cory Booker.
